This month, I’ve been thinking about why the revenue for all the 7 ecommerces sites that my team are managing are doing extremely well? The thing about the revenue being so amazing is that we’ve been able to achieve this consistently in the last few months and of course my Boss is very pleased.
The main thing that I think about is why didn’t this happen before? Didn’t I have more incentive to work harder because it was my own company? Are the sales up because I want to please my boss? The main question that is stumping me, what is the distinct difference between previous years versus now?
It finally dawned on me this morning after my first glorious sip of peppermint mocha latte from Starbucks, that now as Director of Ecommerce, I get to focus solely on my two most favorite aspect of ecommerce which are merchandising and marketing. Not only do I get to focus on this two areas, but more importantly, my boss leaves me alone. Don’t get me wrong, we touch base often and she mentors me what I should be fine tuning, but overall she leaves me to do my job.
If you’re an entrepreneur/business owner, the take away I would like to have you think about today is
1. What can you do to help your Ecommerce Director focus better on his/her job?
2. How many projects are there on her plate and must they all be her responsibility?
3. What can you take off her plate to allow her the time to really think about what is really important and needs fine-tuning?
If your Director of Ecommerce can meet budgeted sales goals or even exceed target sales goals, wouldn’t you want her/him to keep on keeping on? One mistake I made before as a business owner is, when I had a super star employee, I figured, hey, she’s amazing, wonder what more she can do, fix or take on? This is not a good idea, eventually her productivity suffered, stress levels went up and she eventually got burned out.
If you are your own Director of Ecommerce, what can you delegate, outsource or just plain old stop doing that will allow you to focus more on driving higher top line revenue to your ecommerce business?
By the way, I’ve been on the job for almost 1 year, on May 1st. Happy Anniversary to me.
